How should you pack before a household move?

When preparing for a household move, it is important to pack in a way that protects your belongings and makes the relocation as smooth as possible. Moving companies such as OCT provide detailed packing instructions to help you pack your items safely and efficiently. Here are some general guidelines that may help:

  • Use the right materials: Invest in sturdy moving boxes, packing tape and protective materials such as bubble wrap or packing paper. At OCT, we can provide all the materials you need to ensure your belongings are properly protected during transport.
  • Pack heavy items in small boxes and light items in large boxes: To avoid boxes becoming too heavy to carry, it is important to pack heavy items such as books in smaller boxes and lighter items such as clothes or bedding in larger boxes. This makes lifting and transport much easier.
  • Protect fragile items: Glassware, porcelain and other fragile items should be packed carefully with extra protective material. Place them vertically in boxes and clearly label the boxes as “Fragile” so they are handled with extra care during the move.
  • Label and organize: Clearly label all boxes with their contents and the room they should be placed in when arriving at your new home. This makes unpacking much easier and faster.
  • Do not overpack each box: Overfilled boxes can break or become too heavy to handle. Make sure to leave some space in each box so it can be closed properly and secured with packing tape.
